Testing yet another iPhone app for blogging

Testing yet another iPhone app to use for blogging, this time ByWord

This app has been recommended and is in use by other blind and visually impaired users. It seems to have many features, including of course Markdown, and you can also preview your document as an HTML formatted version and even create a PDF.

With spellchecking, Word count and much more it’s worth investigating.

But, as always, the main thing to be seen is whether it will successfully upload my posts to my account on Blogger (or Blogspot).

Here goes!

Catching up - 30th Aug 2011

Fri 19 Aug 2011: I LOVE it when Tash or Lal come up. Dad's
always in a good mood when the girls come up and though it's good
fun with lots of rough-and-tumble-and-see-how-excited-you-can-get
with the boys, the girls do anththing I ask. AND they give me
more treats, AND take me on walks.

Tash (who Dad calls Na-Tash-A when he's pretending to be cross
with her) and Steve couldn't come till Saturday, but Lal (aka
Daniela, Danni) got here late on Friday evening. Dad let me stay
up a bit, but then sent me to bed. As if I need beauty sleep.

Sat 20 Aug 2011: I had lots of fun with my tugging rope and
winding Tash and Lal up in the house today. And Anton and Jane
came round too. Dad was quite happy but was a bit cross that it
wasn't really nice enough to go to the park.

In the evening we all stayed in and we all talked and Dad drank
his home made beer (I like it too when he's not looking!) and
Anton let me stay up till nearly the morning! Dad was a bit cross
about this but I showed him I was WIDE AWAKE all day and can stay
up as late as anyone else can.

Sun 21 Aug 2011: We went with Debbie (she helps Mum) to Hebden
Bridge and it was nice and sunny. I was very good working in the
shops, through the market, and on the main street. Even Dad was
impressed how well I work in crowds, but that's the best time,
coz there's something to do rather than just WALKING and STOPPING
AT KERBS.

We met a nice lady in Heart Gallery, and she said she liked Dad's
candles. So I smiled and she liked them even more.

When we got back, I was allowed to come and say goodbye to Tash
and Steve as they had to drive all the way back to Kent. I ran
up and down Mum's wheelchair ramp from near the front door to the
car, and everyone laughed at my way of saying I didn't want them
to go. But then I forgot to be good, slipped round the corner
and had a good roll around the lawn. I even got a chance to eat
some nice yummy grass and was about to sneak off for a swim in
the river at the bottom of the garden when Lal caught me and said
NAUGHTY BOY and took me back. Dad didn't shout at me really coz
it was his fault for not putting my lead on. Well, he WOULDN'T
put it on, would he, coz I was showing him how good I could be,
wasn't I?

Tue 23 Aug: It's been raining again and so we couldn't really get
out anywhere but Lal did manage to take me on a walk up to Lumb
where there's lots of cats. But I was good.

Then she went back and so the house is very quiet now. And I'm
BORED.

Fri 26 Aug 2011: Lots of exciting getting-things-ready today, and
Dad's been playing the piano a lot. Dad sometimes makes me lie
down next to him under the piano when he's playing. I slope off
when he's concentrating coz I'd rather not be that close as it's
so loud.

So I knew Dad had something called "a gig" coming up and was
looking forward to it coz that means going somewhere nice with
lots of people who pay ME attention. But this time Mum and Dad
and Ann went without me. [Webster really does not like the high
notes played by jazz trumpeters, and I was nervous about the gig
too so thought Webster would be better with a bit of a holiday
for this one.--Dad]

Anyway Anton and Jane came to "dog sit" (i always DO when I'm
asked to, so what are they going on about?), and we had a good
time, with lots of playing in the house and outside and WALKS
too.

Sat 27 Aug 2011: Mum and Dad and Ann came back in the afternoon
and I pretended to sulk at being left. But I forgot after a bit
when Mum and Dad played with my tugging rope. They were all in a
good mood so I hope there's another "gig" soon that I don't have
to go to.

Mon 29 Aug 2011: We all wanted to go out today but it was
horrible and wet. I did go for a walk with Mum and Dad in the
afternoon but we got very rained on coming home and Dad had to
wipe me down with an old towel. I grab the towel and push his
hand away when he tries to dry my paws, but Dad doesn't see the
fun in this game and just gets cross. Ah well, it's a guide
dog's life!

Tue 30 Aug 2011: MAAAAAAAAAAX and Becki and DAISY came round
today. Max is another of Mum and Dad's sons and used to help Dad
a lot with me when I first came to live here. Daisy's my Staffie
friend and is TINY! Well, tiny compared to me, Dad says. But
they had other things to do today and didn't let me play with
her. So I sulked and wouldn't fetch my toy when Dad wanted me
to.

I wonder if she'll come tomorrow?

Catching up

Well it's about time I let you know what I've been up to over the last couple of weeks. I really will try to do this more often., but I need a bit of help from Dad and he always says he needs the computer for WORK.

Computers! He thinks more of them than he does of me! And I have to sleep with one in my room and sometimes it chatters in the night and I don't like it. It's like a ghost.

But let's not talk about that now, this is supposed to be about ME, WEBSTER. So let's catch up!

Tue 26 Duly: Today was fun. Ann (who helps look after Mum and Dad) drove us to the vet's for my twice a year check-up, although I only have to have those horrid jection things once a year. I don't reeeeeally mind them, but I pretend I do and then Dad and Mum say "poor Webster" which makes me feel good.

The vet's is nice and I get treats, but it's hard being good when there's miaowing c-ts around and sometimes dogs I want to play with.

The vet was happy with me but kept looking at my teeth. Dad was a bit upset about this and I'm not surprised really as I had to go back again, but of course I didn't know that then.

Thu 28 Dul: Dad and I went to the baker's in Edenfield today to get some pies for lunch. Not for me, just for Mum and Dad. I NEVER get pies. Just treats for being good and behaving.

And I was good, it was a good walk - no c-ts or yappy dogs, just bins to get round 'coz Thursdays is Bin Day in Edenfield. When I first came to live with Dad I didn't like the bins - I thought they were spooky things, But now I don't mind them, they're just part of the things I have to watch, like lamp-posts and bus stops and people (but people move a lot), so I don't walk Dad into them.

Anyway, I sat nice and straight at the Baker's counter, and got lots of praise from the lady serving and the customers. Dad was pleased with me.

Wed 3 Aug: My other Dad, Alan, who I used to live with, came today. He was my trainer and showed me how to be a good guide dog. Alan comes for what Dad calls my my MOT once a year and I have to show him that I remember EVERYTHING and that I'm the best guide dog in the world. We went into Rawtenstall and I showed off up and down the main street, remembering to tell Dad when we were at all the places we know in Rawtenstall. I wanted to go into The Deli for a coffee but Dad said "not today, Webster" and we went to Bolthole instead. Dad sells some of his nice smelling soaps and candles there and I was so well behaved for Elizabeth that I bet she forgot how I used to be when I was just starting - it was so hard to stay still when I was being praised or talked about. Well, I'm nearly five now so much more grown-up.

After the trip to Rawtenstall we went to a nice park and I had a lovely free run with a guide dog that Alan was looking after. That was great! And I was a GOOD BOY!

Sun 7 Aug: Mum's wheelchair broke just as they were going to have tea. We'd been out for a walk all together in the afternoon, and I was good again, but then the front castor fell off. I was so worried and was glad Mum din't fall out. I hate it when that happens coz I can't help her.

Well, that put Dad and Mum in a bad mood so I just kept quiet and later they both stroked me to make themselves get out of the bad mood.

I do hope they fix the wheelchair soon coz Mum can't come for a walk with us.

Mon 8 Aug: After tea Dad was a bit sad and stroked me a lot. Don't know why.

Tue 9 Aug: Dad was up very early today and DIDN'T FEED ME! I kept telling him but he just made soothing noises and tried to distract me with my toy but I could tell something was up.

And then Ann came early and we got in the van, but no-one was really happy.

At the vet's it was nice talking to the nurse and then - Ann and Dad just patted me and said "be a good boy, Webster" and JUST LEFT ME!

I was left by myself for a bit but I didn't mind and then the vet gave me some of those jection things. When I woke up I felt groggy and my gums were all hurting.

Dad said I'd had a something called a scale and polish and that he was glad I didn't have to have any teeth out.

Fri. 12 Aug: My teeth look nice and clean and my gums are much better now. I'm eating my own biscuit food again, but I'm sure if I ask Mum she'll give me more of that nice tuna and rice that she makes me when I'm poorly she would. They came to fix Mum's wheelchair on Wednesday AND we've been out for walks, a bit slower than usual coz Dad thinks I'm still not quite up to it, and Dad's been less strict with me than usual. I wonder how I can PRETEND to be ill?

Fri 19 Aug: As usual, Mum went to Bury today as it's Friday, and Dad stayed at home to do WORK. He says it's the only day he can get on with things, coz none of the others are in. But they kept talking about Townley Park, and then Ann put loooooooooads of Dad's soaps and candles into the van to take to the shop there. I wanted to go, but Dad said there wasn't enough room for me with Mum's wheelchair and everything in the van. So no free run for Webster today. And I just LOVE Townley Park coz there's lots of open space but enough footballs and sandwiches and water and dogs and children and other nice things to make Dad have to watch me a bit and keep him on his toes.

Oh yes, I nearly forgot! Natasha and Steve (her fiance) and Daniela (Mum and Dad's other daughter) are coming up for the weekend, so that should be fun.

Oh, there's someone at the doooooooooooor!!!!! Back in a mo!

It was MY DOG Food arriving. AND the delivery guy let me check him out - WOW!

Whew! That was very tiring remembering all that stuff. So I'm going to settle down for a sleep and Dad can have his smelly computer back!

The first post (written by Dennis, my owner)

Welcome to 'It's a Guide Dog's Life'!

Before letting Webster loose, in these days of political correctness and the sueing culture, I must make it clear from the outset that this blog is not endorsed by the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, and that any views expressed are purely those of, well, Webster of course.

The aim is to provide readers with a little insight into the life of one particular guide dog and his daily life and surrounded by his immediate circle of two-legged and (occasionally) four-legged friends. Humour, I hope, will highlight some of the ups and downs of Wester's being owned by a blind man and his wife living in rural Lancashire and trying to run a small ethical business producing organic soaps, skincare and aromatherapy soy candles. (OK, end of plug - if you want to read more about that, follow the Essentially Natural blog).

If you like what Webster writes, please tell your friends. If you have questions about Webster's life as a guide dog, please do ask. He is my fifth guide dog (and the most, let's say, interesting... If you need more general information or help on specific topics, just head over to http://www.gdba.org.uk/ and you'll find the answers.

OK, enough from me - Webster's getting impatient at my tapping away on the keyboard, so I'll leave you in his capable paws for the next post coming along shortly.
